What Do Colleges Look for In Students? (Part 2)

Updated: Apr 9

Let's face it, the college admissions process is more complicated than it sounds, especially when we don't know what to expect. This, in turn, could be overwhelming for a student preparing to transition from high school to college.  Colleges are looking for students who will become assets and take the experiences they obtained in high school and apply them to their new learning environment.

In Part One, we discussed four insights into what colleges look for in students. They were as follows: extracurricular activities, grade point average (GPA), character, and recommendation letters.

Below are some additional tips that can help you stand out on your application:

1. Standardized Test Scores

Providing your standardized test scores is very important as a college applicant. As Part One indicated, college admissions officers view thousands of applications daily. Therefore, your application must stand out. Statistics show that including stories from the SAT or ACT exam in your student's application can help show schools of interest that they are academically prepared for college-level work. Additionally, standardized test scores could also aid in the search for scholarships.

Key Reminder: Many schools have made standardized tests optional due to the pandemic. However, in the event that the school of your choice makes the test-optional, perhaps, taking it anyway will allow your application to stand out even further.

2. Enthusiasm for Attending the University

Showing enthusiasm for attending the university is vital as a college applicant. When a student continues to show a demonstrated interest in a school, it gets on their radar. As an applicant, choosing a college should not be academically based. Research everything that you need to know. It will allow you to provide clear reasoning on why that college is right for you.

You can demonstrate your enthusiasm by:

• Scheduling a campus visit

• Remaining in contact with the admissions department

• Partaking in informational sessions and/or interviews

3. Leadership

Leadership is among the many qualities colleges look for in a college application. An article stated, "Colleges aim to not only educate their students and hand them a diploma but guide them to become leaders in their various fields." Colleges would like students who are motivated, dependable, responsible, etc...: all characteristics that make a great leader.

To obtain leadership experience, you can do so through volunteer opportunities, jobs, or at your local high school. Remember that your leadership experience will benefit your application and future opportunities in the real world.

4. Unique Skills/Talents

Your talents and skills will speak for you, especially as a college applicant. As an applicant, colleges love to see students' passion for their hobbies. Admissions committees are curious to see how your passions fuel your drive and work ethic. With your skills being demonstrated, your profile will stand out even more! Part One indicates that your personal life is as important as your academics. Showcase them! Be proud of who you are and what you can do!
